Flower Power: Decorating with Flowers

Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.

We have to admit, Meryl Streep put it perfectly in Devil Wears Prada, decorating with florals in spring time is hardly an innovative idea. However, we definitely believe that you can add a modern twist to this timeless trend, and with everything outside truly blossoming, it is the perfect time to talk all things floral for the home.

Investing in the real deal
There is no denying that fresh blooms add a gorgeous touch to your home space – we definitely wouldn’t limit their use to the dining room table. From your bedroom to the bathroom and kitchen, a lively arrangement of colourful flowers can brighten any space (and your day!).  Spring is obviously the best time to play with floral design, you can pop down to your local flower market or florist, or pick some blooms fresh from your garden. Some of our seasonal favourites include peonies, poppies, tulips and baby’s breath.

Pro tip: to keep your flowers fresher for longer, use a very sharp knife to cut about 3cm off your stems whilst running them under water. Do this at a 45 degree angle, and don’t forget to remove any greenery that will be submerged in the vase. Commercial flower food is the best thing to give your flowers to keep them alive for longer, however adding about ¼ of a teaspoon of bleach can also help with longevity.

Fake it ‘til you make it
Not all of us are natural green thumbs, which is where artificial flowers come into the picture! They require zero maintenance, will look great all year round and – if you choose the right kind – can look incredibly real. We have a great variety of artificial flowers that are perfect for adding to any vase.

Choosing your base
Just like bags and shoes, we believe you can never have too many vases. Choosing a vase for your bouquet of flowers is a personal choice and very much dependent on the type of flowers you are using.

A classic clear vase like this one from Aspire won’t date, and is perfect for any room in your home. Other vases to complement your floral design are the Muse vases in Bronze dip and Sundown, as well as the Mosaic vase from Aspire.

Floral accents at home
Using floral prints is another easy way to bring the garden inside your home. Try adding a floral printed cushion, quilt cover, table cloth or piece of wall art into your home. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could also try floral wall stickers or wallpaper for a bigger statement.
